Imerman Angels, the leading global one-on-one cancer support community and Chicago PR client, has been named a Scale Award recipient at the 2017 Creator Awards for their work in providing free personalized connections that enable one-on-one support for cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers. The Scale Award, which includes a $180,000 grant, is given to established organizations that are ready to take their business to the next level.

The event, hosted and sponsored by WeWork, received 600 applicants that were narrowed down to five Scale Award finalists who had the opportunity to pitch their business to a panel of judges and explain how and why they are ready to expand. In addition to Imerman Angels, Chicago nonprofit Bunker Labs and Detroit-based The Empowerment Plan took home top honors in the category.

Founded in 2006 by cancer survivor Jonny Imerman, Imerman Angels to date has enabled more than 34,000 connections in all 50 states and more than 60 countries. These one-on-one relationships provide a cancer fighter or caregiver the chance to ask personal questions and receive support from someone uniquely familiar with the experience. Recent medical studies have shown that psychosocial support during and after the cancer fight is crucial to quality of life.

“We are thrilled that our work over the past 11 years has been recognized through this large award,” says Ben Bornstein, Imerman Angels CEO and Executive Director. “This grant will allow us to scale our one-on-one cancer support services by expanding our presence in other US markets outside Chicago including Detroit, Los Angeles and New York, plus reach more people touched by cancer around the world by expanding our digital presence and hiring additional cancer support specialists, including those who speak other languages.”

In addition, other benefits of receiving this grant include expanding Imerman Angels’ network of partner organizations, and of course, ensuring that their services remain completely free to anyone seeking support so no one has to face cancer alone.

Arthur Murray Presents Dancing with Chicago Celebrities, held on Friday, March 10 at the Hilton Chicago, welcomed nearly 600 guests to the 12th annual, “Rock Around the Clock” themed gala to benefit the fight against breast cancer.

Local celebrities and corporate superstars, each paired with a professional partner from Arthur Murray Dance Centers, competed to help raise a record-setting $300,000. Net proceeds benefit organizations impacting Chicago’s fight against breast cancer through preventative research and access to care: A Silver Lining Foundation, University of Chicago Cancer Research, Lurie Cancer Center and City of Hope.

Jason Davis, former NFL player, was crowned 2017 Celebrity Superstar for his high-energy dance moves including his jaw dropping, signature triple flip. Lee Allison, The Lee Allison Company, earned a rousing ovation and took home the title of Corporate Challenge Dance Champion.

The Celebrity MVP trophy for highest fundraising went to NBC 5 TV’s Peggy Kusinski, who dedicated her dance to her sister Patty Kusinski Smith, who died after a fearless battle with breast cancer. Peggy raised an impressive $35,000 to break the celebrity fundraising record previously held by Lou Manfredini of WGN Radio.

The Corporate Challenge MVP for raising the most funds was gratefully awarded to Lee Henderson, Ernst & Young.

Celebrity dancers also included Brent Sopel, former NHL player; Lauren Magiera, WGN TV; Sandra Torres, CBS 2; Liz Nagy, ABC 7; Jenny Milkowski, FOX 32; Anthony Ponce, Backseat Rider Podcaster; and Omar Ramos, Univision.

Corporate Challenge Superstars also included Dr. Regina Stein, Northwestern Memorial Hospital; Joan Morris, The Home Depot; Dr. Nora Jaskowiak, University of Chicago Medicine; Michele Hoskins, Michele’s Foods; Katherine Hampson, UBS; and Tracey Seward from Accenture.

This year’s glamorous competition was judged by Snow Urbin, finalist on FOX’s “So You Think You Can Dance” and current Arthur Murray U.S. National Rhythm Champion, Nick Kosovich, ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” professional and US and Arthur Murray champion; Jarrett Payton, WGN TV and CLTV, former NFL player and 2016 Celebrity Champion; Quinton MacAdam, Arthur Murray franchisee and Rick Bayless, Top Chef Master and 2006 Celebrity Champion.

Annually, the Dancing with Chicago Celebrities board gives the Katrina Rodriguez Morales Memorial Award to an Arthur Murray professional who has shown exceptional commitment to the event and the fight against breast cancer. This year, the award was presented to Nick Kosovich.

When not hitting the dance floor themselves, guests of the 2017 Dancing with Chicago Celebrities soiree also indulged in food and cocktails, generously bid on silent and live auctions, and enjoyed a special showcase from the professional staff at Arthur Murray.

The event is organized and executed each year through the tireless efforts of the DWCC Board: Jill DeMarlo, Jane Melvin, Dina Bair, Amy Novotny and Steve Baker, who are looking forward to hosting “Lucky 13” next year.

Garrett Popcorn Shops®, a Molise PR client, is partnering with internationally renowned, Chicago-based artist Hebru Brantley to create two extraordinary Tin designs inspired by and benefitting the youth that are shaping the world today. Garrett® will donate 15 percent of the proceeds from the limited edition Tins to the Chicago Children’s Choir, a multiracial, multicultural choral music education organization.

hebru_ccc_1g_q_garrettmix

Hebru Brantley breaks down the walls of cultural boundaries and tells stories using youthful characters and their adventures as the subjects of his art. First inspired by the empowering murals of the Afro Cobra movement that lined the walls of the South Side of Chicago in the ‘60s and ‘70s, Brantley looks to offer the same hope and optimism to the nation’s youth in a more engaging manner.

“Garrett Popcorn Shops and Chicago Children’s Choir are institutions spanning six decades,” comments Brantley. “I’m excited to share my work with the families and communities that both organizations have so passionately served for generations.”

The Chicago Children’s Choir engages 4,400 children annually, and empowers singers to bridge cultural divides and become ambassadors of peace in their communities. With programs in 79 Chicago schools, 10 after-school neighborhood programs, an ensemble for boys with changing voices and the internationally-acclaimed Voice of Chicago, the diversity of Chicago Children’s Choir reflects the cultural landscape of the city. The Choir proudly serves its community with frequent performances throughout Chicago.

“The pieces that Hebru Brantley created for Garrett Popcorn Shops are a treasure in more ways than one,” says Josephine Lee, Chicago Children’s Choir’s President and Artistic Director. “The funds raised through this initiative will help our mission to inspire and change lives through music.”

The limited edition Tins are now available in Shops and online at www.GarrettPopcorn.com in any recipe. A One Gallon Hebru Brantley Tin costs $36 when filled with Garrett Mix®, which blends the sophisticated sweetness of CaramelCrisp® with the savory goodness of CheeseCorn; or $15.95 for a One Quart Tin of Garrett Mix (minimum 12 Quarts required for online purchases).  For collectors who seek both Tin designs, a Hebru Brantley Tin Bundle featuring a One Gallon Tin of Garrett Mix and a Quart Tin of Buttery is $51.95.  (Shipping not included in prices.)

“Food, music and art are key ingredients in any culture,” says Scott Schroeder, Chief Brand Officer, Garrett Popcorn Shops. “This partnership is a perfect alignment for our Garrett Cares charitable program.”

Wish Upon A Wedding Grants 100th Wish To Extraordinary Couple in Chicago
12814702_10153933789224330_8025941713943512337_n

Honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October

Wish Upon A Wedding, a national nonprofit organization that provides weddings and vow renewals for couples facing serious illness OR a life-altering circumstance in all 50 states, is proud to grant its 100th wish to couple Anne and Jon on Sunday, October 23 at the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel (221 N Columbus Dr.) in Chicago. The Chicago Chapter of Wish Upon a Wedding is proud to be the chapter handling this wish and honored that it is taking place in Chicago.

Anne and Jon first met online in 2008 after Anne had cp2_1425undergone a mastectomy to treat her Stage 0 breast cancer. Anne worried no one would ever love or want her in her post-treatment state. She was scared her physical appearance and her two sons from her previous marriage would cause people to look the other way. Anne’s eldest son who was born with a chromosomal disorder and is unable to speak, is wheelchair bound and completely dependent on Anne.

However, the opposite happened. Anne met Jon and recalls how he immediately and completely accepted her and the boys. “He just came right in and took all of it,” remembers Anne. In addition to Anne’s boys, now 15 and 9, the couple also has a 5-year-old son together.

Although the doctors told Anne the chances of her cancer returning were one in a million after her surgery, a routine scan in October 2014 found the contrary. Anne’s cancer had returned – Stage 4 Metastatic breast cancer. Through it all, Anne continues to remain positive, grateful and always smiling.

When asked what Jon loves most about Anne, he responded without hesitation, “She is amazing. She handles everything for everyone and always puts herself last. She never asks for herself. She is wonderful.” Anne and Jon’s relationship is built on an unbreakable trust, a boundless love and support system, and they are ready to exchange their vows on October 23.

“Granting our 100th wish is an exciting milestone for Wish Upon a Wedding,” says National President Alison Phillips. “Since our founding in 2010, we have been honored to help 100 couples and we look forward to helping grant wedding wishes to many more couples in need.”

The happy couple will say “I Do” during an intimate wedding ceremony organized by Wish Upon A Wedding Chicago Chapter at the Radisson Blu Hotel. Other participating vendors donating their services include Elysia Root Cakes, Carasco Photography, Estera Events, Aria Films, Makeup by Aga, Dimitra’s Bridal, Sarah Drake Design, Fleur, Rosemary Fanti, Elegant Event Lighting, Nimblewell, The Black Tux, Bonnie Cortez, Rosemary of Rosemary Salon and DJ Al Okyne of Okyne Media Lab.

“We are counting down the days until we can see the look on Jon’s face when he see’s Anne walking down the aisle, and can’t wait to watch as those closest to them get to celebrate the love and the family Anne & Jon have built,” says Bianca Hall of Estera Events. “To say we are honored to be part of this celebration is an understatement – we are absolutely overjoyed.”

“The Reason to Rock event is a lot of fun, and this year we’ve added some new elements including live music from the band Slingblade,” said Stephanie Somers, Executive Director for the Scleroderma Foundation of Greater Chicago. “We’re excited to continue this unique event for people across the Western Suburbs of Chicago while raising money to support our mission and creating awareness about scleroderma.”

Scleroderma is a chronic, often progressive, autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks its own body. The disease, which literally means “hard skin” can cause thickening and tightening of the skin. In some cases is causes serious damage to internal organs including the heart, lungs, kidneys, esophagus and gastrointestinal tract. These organs may slowly harden until they become ineffective. Some medicines and treatments can help with certain symptoms, but there is still no cure for scleroderma. The disease affects three to four times as many women as men. For more information visit www.scleroderma.org.

Advanced registration for the event is $30 for adults, $15 for youth ages 9-18, and $5 for children 8 and younger. On-site registration at the event is $35 for adults, $20 for youth ages 9-18, and $10 for children 8 and younger. Food, beverages and activities are included in the ticket price. Participants will be provided with a personal and team fundraising page upon registration, and are encouraged to set their own personal fundraising goal by receiving pledges from family and friends.

As Imerman Angels celebrates its 10-year anniversary in 2016, the organization recognizes August as #WorldCancerSupport Month. Imerman Angels launched this campaign last year to help spread awareness regarding the psychological and physiological benefits of support when coupled with excellent medical care, and to help ensure that no one ever has to face cancer alone, without the support of someone uniquely familiar with their situation.

Since launching in 2006, Imerman Angels, a Molise PR client, has become the global leader in providing personalized connections that enable one-on-one support among cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers, as well as pairing survivors with fellow survivors, with more than 26,000 connections made in all 50 states and more than 60 countries.

The Need for Cancer Support

According to a Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer Psychosocial Study Group, when cancer patients are diagnosed and treatment begins, the primary goal is therapeutic. Psychological, emotional and social factors tend to become secondary to immediate treatment. However, according to Dr. Timothy Pearman, Director of Supportive Oncology at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, this social and emotional support has powerful benefits when it comes to survivorship:

“As cancer has transitioned from a typically fatal disease to an often chronic, manageable one, the psychosocial supportive care needs of survivors have expanded,” says Dr. Pearman. “Cancer support groups such as Imerman Angels can reduce depression and anxiety in fighters, and help them to become more active in treatment decision-making, managing side effects, interfacing with their doctors, and ultimately maximizing their quality of life during and after their cancer battle.”

In a study at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center focusing on young adults diagnosed with blood cancers facing psychological trauma during and after treatment, researchers found that 23 percent of participants met the criteria for anxiety, 28 percent met the criteria for depression and 13 percent met the criteria for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

“Imerman Angels and other organizations that provide cancer support give cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers around the world an outlet to express their feelings, as well as help to inspire hope,” says Ben Bornstein, three-time cancer survivor and Imerman Angels CEO and Executive Director.

Stand Out Against Cancer Day, August 19

On Friday, August 19, Imerman Angels will host “Stand Out Against Cancer Day” an occasion dedicated to raising awareness around the world for the importance of social and emotional support for those battling cancer. Schools, businesses, organizations and individuals alike will be encouraged to create their own Stand Out Against Cancer event to fundraise, raise awareness and help make a difference. They are also given the opportunity to have their support recognized through social media through #StandOutAgainstCancer.

Social Media Campaign

Imerman Angels is implementing a #WorldCancerSupport hashtag during August that allows people from around the world to share their cancer stories by posting on social media channels. Everyone has been affected by cancer in some way, and together we can ensure that no one will ever have to face cancer alone.

In addition, Imerman Angels will continue their 10-year anniversary giveaways of Imerman Cakes by seeking out engaging social media posts from July through September.
