Real Urban Barbecue, a Molise PR client, is the official BBQ partner for BBQ for the Troops, an initiative that raises funds for local military and their families through exciting events and social media campaigns. The Chicago Automobile Trade Associate (CATA) and the USO of Illinois are partnering to host the 5th annual Barbecue for the Troops on July 15. 100 dealerships throughout the area will simultaneously fire up their grills in support of our local troops.

Imerman Angels, the leading global one-on-one cancer support community and Chicago PR client, has been named a Scale Award recipient at the 2017 Creator Awards for their work in providing free personalized connections that enable one-on-one support for cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers. The Scale Award, which includes a $180,000 grant, is given to established organizations that are ready to take their business to the next level.

The event, hosted and sponsored by WeWork, received 600 applicants that were narrowed down to five Scale Award finalists who had the opportunity to pitch their business to a panel of judges and explain how and why they are ready to expand. In addition to Imerman Angels, Chicago nonprofit Bunker Labs and Detroit-based The Empowerment Plan took home top honors in the category.

Founded in 2006 by cancer survivor Jonny Imerman, Imerman Angels to date has enabled more than 34,000 connections in all 50 states and more than 60 countries. These one-on-one relationships provide a cancer fighter or caregiver the chance to ask personal questions and receive support from someone uniquely familiar with the experience. Recent medical studies have shown that psychosocial support during and after the cancer fight is crucial to quality of life.

“We are thrilled that our work over the past 11 years has been recognized through this large award,” says Ben Bornstein, Imerman Angels CEO and Executive Director. “This grant will allow us to scale our one-on-one cancer support services by expanding our presence in other US markets outside Chicago including Detroit, Los Angeles and New York, plus reach more people touched by cancer around the world by expanding our digital presence and hiring additional cancer support specialists, including those who speak other languages.”

In addition, other benefits of receiving this grant include expanding Imerman Angels’ network of partner organizations, and of course, ensuring that their services remain completely free to anyone seeking support so no one has to face cancer alone.

Skokie is getting smokyReal Urban Barbecue, with locations in Downtown Highland Park, Vernon Hills, and Oak Brook, is proud to announce the grand opening of their fourth location in Skokie on Friday, June 23 at 10 a.m.  Located at 5238 W. Touhy Avenue just west of I-94, the restaurant will open for lunch, dinner, and weekend breakfast; as well as offer carryout, delivery, and corporate and private catering.

A Menu That’s Smoked & Served to Perfection

Culinary Fight Club will take place on June 19 and feature a showdown between four local chefs with proceeds benefiting local non-profit, Fight2Feed. Yappy Hour Tuesdays will kick off on June 20 and take place on the dog-friendly outside patio.

Culinary Fight Club Pitmaster Throw down Challenge – Monday, June 19

On Monday, June 19, Hard Rock Cafe will host a Culinary Fight Club Pitmaster Throw down Challenge from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., where four local Chicago chefs will battle it out in a seriously tasty cook-off. A portion of proceeds from the event will benefit Fight2Feed, a non-profit with a mission end hunger in Chicago by partnering with local restaurants to reduce food waste and share food with people in need.

Participating chefs will have two hours to create their best dish that combines the art of BBQ, grilling and open fire cooking. Industry experts will judge contestants based on presentation and how well the chefs have mastered the pit by cooking up the perfect protein and two sides.

Competing chefs include: Dylan Lipe, The Budlong Hot Chicken; Hipolito Sanchez, Slow Motion For Meat; Kristina Gaardbo, Chicago Culinary Kitchen and Rockin Rodizio; and Corey Rice, a Chicago home cook.

June Mixology Academy with Bulleit Bourbon – Saturday, June 17 at 3 p.m.

Just in time for summer, La Mez Agave Lounge, located downstairs at Mercadito, hosts its monthly Mixology Academy course, led by Beverage Director Paul Tanguay. The course will feature cocktails crafted with Bulleit Bourbon.

Guests are invited to learn insider tips and techniques to craft perfectly balanced cocktails at home, all while absorbing a bit of useful alcohol history about Bulleit Bourbon and getting saucy with friends and classmates. Appetizers will be provided, courtesy of Mercadito Chicago’s Executive Chef Patricio Sandoval. Guests are also welcome to purchase items off of the regular menu.

Dame Calor Experiential Dinner – Monday, June 19 from 6-9 p.m.

Celebrate warmer weather with a special Dame Calor Experiential Dinner. Hosted by Mercadito’s Executive Chef Patricio Sandoval and special guest Paul Sauter of Diageo, guests are invited to enjoy four courses expertly paired
with Don Julio Tequila pours.

Guests will begin the night with a Guacamole Trio that includes Sandia, Durazno and Pepino. Guests will then indulge in a Ceviche Trio that includes Camaron, Dorado and Mixto and delight in a selection of tacos, including Carne, Pollo, Langosta and Pescado. The night ends on a sweet note with Tres Leches.

The Imerman Angels Brunch Run 5K & Walk returns to picturesque Montrose Harbor on Saturday, June 17. Over 2,000 runners and walkers will come together along the beachside course to raise funds to support Imerman Angels and its mission of providing one-on-one support for cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers.

In addition to on-course gourmet surprises, runners and walkers alike will be treated to a signature brunch buffet from award-winning Blue Plate Catering – honored with the 2016 Leading Caterers of America Award. Each participant (21 and older) also receives a trip to the Mimosa Bar, Cold-Brewed Coffee Station featuring High Brew Coffee and an ice-cold beer.

Ready…Set…Brunch!

Created by the 2014 Catering Chef of the Year Paul Larson, the brunch menu features a full spread of brunch items including a variety of savory and vegetarian breakfast sandwiches; apple wood smoked bacon; baked cinnamon-raisin French toast casserole; house made breakfast bread assortment, a seasonal fruit display; Blue Plate pastries; roasted breakfast potatoes; Kiddo “pancake” dogs; and mini yogurt parfaits.

Participants have the option to walk or run the chip-timed 5K course, or opt for the single mile course, in honor of a loved one who has battled cancer. Form a team or walk as an individual; this is a family event and all are welcome. Registration for the 5K course costs $50 for adults and $20 for children ages 5-12. The one-mile course is $40 for adults and $20 for children ages 5-12. Children under five are free.

Those who cannot make it on June 17 may register as a virtual runner for $30 and still help raise funds supporting the Imerman Angels mission.
