Imerman Angels, the leading global one-on-one cancer support community and Chicago PR client, has been named a Scale Award recipient at the 2017 Creator Awards for their work in providing free personalized connections that enable one-on-one support for cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers. The Scale Award, which includes a $180,000 grant, is given to established organizations that are ready to take their business to the next level.

The event, hosted and sponsored by WeWork, received 600 applicants that were narrowed down to five Scale Award finalists who had the opportunity to pitch their business to a panel of judges and explain how and why they are ready to expand. In addition to Imerman Angels, Chicago nonprofit Bunker Labs and Detroit-based The Empowerment Plan took home top honors in the category.

Founded in 2006 by cancer survivor Jonny Imerman, Imerman Angels to date has enabled more than 34,000 connections in all 50 states and more than 60 countries. These one-on-one relationships provide a cancer fighter or caregiver the chance to ask personal questions and receive support from someone uniquely familiar with the experience. Recent medical studies have shown that psychosocial support during and after the cancer fight is crucial to quality of life.

“We are thrilled that our work over the past 11 years has been recognized through this large award,” says Ben Bornstein, Imerman Angels CEO and Executive Director. “This grant will allow us to scale our one-on-one cancer support services by expanding our presence in other US markets outside Chicago including Detroit, Los Angeles and New York, plus reach more people touched by cancer around the world by expanding our digital presence and hiring additional cancer support specialists, including those who speak other languages.”

In addition, other benefits of receiving this grant include expanding Imerman Angels’ network of partner organizations, and of course, ensuring that their services remain completely free to anyone seeking support so no one has to face cancer alone.

Skokie is getting smokyReal Urban Barbecue, with locations in Downtown Highland Park, Vernon Hills, and Oak Brook, is proud to announce the grand opening of their fourth location in Skokie on Friday, June 23 at 10 a.m.

A Menu That’s Smoked & Served to Perfection

Their bark is as great as their bite. Take a seat at RUB’s BBQ Bar and watch [or drool] as the magic happens in the “Smoking Room” equipped with two massive Cooshack smokers capable of producing more than 3,000 lbs. per day of “low and slow” smoked items- like baby back ribs ordered dry, wet or to “perfection”; pulled pork, Texas sausage, turkey, brisket and chicken.

Real Urban Barbecue is the first restaurant to bring the delicacy of perfectly charred, caramelized burnt ends to Chicago, and now Skokie. June Mixology Academy with Bulleit Bourbon – Saturday, June 17 at 3 p.m.

Just in time for summer, La Mez Agave Lounge, located downstairs at Mercadito, hosts its monthly Mixology Academy course, led by Beverage Director Paul Tanguay. The course will feature cocktails crafted with Bulleit Bourbon.

Guests are invited to learn insider tips and techniques to craft perfectly balanced cocktails at home, all while absorbing a bit of useful alcohol history about Bulleit Bourbon and getting saucy with friends and classmates. Appetizers will be provided, courtesy of Mercadito Chicago’s Executive Chef Patricio Sandoval. Guests are also welcome to purchase items off of the regular menu.

Mercadito’s Mixology Academy course costs $45 per guest, plus tax and gratuity. Reservations are required.

Dame Calor Experiential Dinner – Monday, June 19 from 6-9 p.m.

Celebrate warmer weather with a special Dame Calor Experiential Dinner. Hosted by Mercadito’s Executive Chef Patricio Sandoval and special guest Paul Sauter of Diageo, guests are invited to enjoy four courses expertly paired with Don Julio Tequila pours.

Guests will begin the night with a Guacamole Trio that includes Sandia, Durazno and Pepino. Guests will then indulge in a Ceviche Trio that includes Camaron, Dorado and Mixto and delight in a selection of tacos, including Carne, Pollo, Langosta and Pescado. The night ends on a sweet note with Tres Leches.

Mercadito Chicago, a Molise PR client, is set to participate in Timeout Chicago‘s first ever Taco Thursday event at Joe’s on Weed Street Thursday, May 11 beginning at 6 p.m. Guests to the event will sample a taco from each of the participating restaurants from around the city, and also sip on two complimentary drinks.

The Taco Thursday event will also feature a live DJ set and games throughout the night. Taco bout a good time!

To help spread the word, Chef Aldo stopped by ABC 7 Chicago to teach Terrell Brown ABC7 how to recreate their signature camarón tacos. Check out the full clip below:

Hard Rock Cafe Chicago, a Molise PR client, in partnership with ReverbNation, hosts a regional battle of the bands, Hard Rock Rising, on Saturday, May 13 beginning at 9 pm. Four local bands will take the stage to compete for their chance to advance on and perform during halftime at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

Local music industry leaders will unite in support of Chicago musicians at this high energy competition. Lauren O’Neil from 101WKQX will emcee the evening, and the panel of judges includes Tom Barnas, WGN TV Around Town and Music Lounge Producer; Michael Heidemann, WGN AM Radio Executive Producer and Host of Sound Sessions podcast; and Jim Kopeny, Chicagoist Senior Editor, Arts & Entertainment.

Hard Rock Cafe Chicago’s local finalist will receive $1,000, a Fender instruments prize pack, and a 1,000 CD/DVD pack of the artist’s latest recording or video from Bison Disc. They will also advance on to be judged by a panel of international music industry professionals who will select the global grand prize winner. The grand prize recipient will perform during halftime at Hard Rock Stadium and will have the opportunity to create a professionally produced music video, which will be added to Hard Rock’s world-wide video system.

Make Cinco de Mayo a weeklong celebration at Mercadito Chicago, a Chicago PR agency client, with a Cinco de Mayo Experiential Dinner on Monday, May 1 and a special five-course prix fixe menu available Friday, May 5. Plus, guests are invited to attempt Mercadito’s Vato Loco cocktail, known as the “Hottest Drink on Earth.”

Cinco de Mayo Experiential Dinner, May 1 from 6-9 p.m.

Start the festivities early with a special Cinco de Mayo Experiential Dinner. Guests are invited to enjoy five courses, each expertly paired with Mezcales de Leyenda pours.

Begin the celebration with a selection of Botanas Mexicanas that includes Tostaditas de Tinga de Res, Guacamole con Chicharron, Tacos Dorados, Sopes de Chorizo and Tacos de Chicharron en Salsa.

Guests will then enjoy Tamales de Mole Poblano, revel in Chile Relleno de Quesillo and indulge in Pozole Rojo. For dessert, guests will be treated to Flan Napolitano.

Plus, guests are invited with caution to try the Vato Loco cocktail, known as “The Hottest Drink on Earth” at Mercadito. The Vato Loco is perfectly mixed with ancho- infused blanco tequila, arbol chile syrup, pineapple-habanero puree, whole milk, fresh lime juice, a flaming jalapeno with over-proofed rum and four dashes of Tabasco, $15. Guests are required to sign a waiver form before attempting the Vato Loco cocktail.

The event will benefit Reading With Pictures, a Chicago 501(c)3 nonprofit that works with educators, governments and comic book artists to create educational comics that are used to get children engaged in learning about everything from algebra to sustainability.

Press Start to Rock will be hosted by comic con personalities Erica Fett, Nicole Salera and The Chicago Bombshells, and emceed by Groovie Louie. Guests will get down to 80’s themed tunes with live musical acts Insane Ian, Boy Meets Robot and Freaks Who Geek. Guests will enjoy beverages courtesy of Revolution Brewing, tabletop games organized by Geeky Gatherings and exciting raffle prizes. Video game consoles will be made available by I Play Games.
