A Menu That’s Smoked & Served to Perfection

Their bark is as great as their bite. Take a seat at RUB’s BBQ Bar and watch [or drool] as the magic happens in the “Smoking Room” equipped with two massive Cooshack smokers capable of producing more than 3,000 lbs. per day of “low and slow” smoked items- like baby back ribs ordered dry, wet or to “perfection”; pulled pork, Texas sausage, turkey, brisket and chicken.

Real Urban Barbecue is the first restaurant to bring the delicacy of perfectly charred, caramelized burnt ends to Chicago, and now Skokie. Top it all off with RUB’s homemade, signature sauces, and pair with comfort sides like mac & cheese, sweet potato soufflé and golden corn bake. Sandwiches, fresh salads, homemade desserts and a wide variety of gluten free options are also featured on RUB’s expansive menu.

Plus, for the first time ever, Real Urban Barbecue Skokie will offer breakfast every Saturday and Sunday morning featuring made-to-order breakfast tacos, fresh fruit, yogurt parfaits, fresh-brewed coffee, tea and more.

Also a first for RUB, an assortment of ice-cold draft beers will be available on tap.

“Since opening our first location in 2010, we have slow-smoked and served more than 156,000 slabs of ribs and over 391 tons of brisket,” says owner Jeff Shapiro. “The numbers don’t lie, and the demand is higher than ever. We’ve heard our fans pleas, and we are so excited to bring our newest and biggest Real Urban Barbecue location to-date to Skokie.”

Real Urban Barbecue’s Skokie location features high, loft-style exposed wood barrel ceilings above handcrafted rustic wood tables and booths that seat approximately 100 guests. Coming soon, RUB’s outdoor patio will provide additional seating for approximately 30 people.

Real Urban Barbecue’s Skokie location hours are as follows:

Monday – Thursday, 10:30 a.m. – 10 p.m. (Except for the grand opening date, Friday, June 23 when the restaurant will open early at 10 a.m.)

The Chicago Automobile Trade Association (CATA) and United Service Organizations (USO) have designated the month of July as the official month to support troops and their families by hosting USO Barbecue for the Troops events at CATA dealerships throughout Chicagoland. In just two years, CATA dealerships have been able to raise $125,000 for the USO of Illinois by hosting Barbecue for the Troops fundraising events, and this year is shaping up to be even bigger! Wednesday July 1 was the kick-off event with media at the United Center in conjunction with the Blackhawks, previewing what the barbecues on July 18 will be all about- delicious food, fun activities, and paying respects to our troops and flag.

Throughout July, there will also be a launching the Cup Holder Change Drive initiative to encourage people to stop by their local dealer service center – during their next oil change or tire rotation – and donate the loose change from their cup holders. Every cent counts and will be donated directly to local troops. To top it off, Chicago Public Relations firm client Real Urban Barbecue will be sponsoring a social media challenge as a month-long campaign in order to spread awareness for the July 18 BBQ events; fans will be encouraged to submit a 15-second video or image with #BBQ4Troops explaining why they want to host the Ultimate Backyard BBQ for the Troops. Real Urban Barbecue’s food speaks for itself.

Chicago Public Relations Firm, Molise PR, has had a successful few weeks with one of our clients, Real Urban BBQ, as they have been competing in barbeque competitions and food festivals around Chicagoland like RibFest Chicago, Taste of Lincolnshire, Taste of Highland Park and Little Bear RibfFest. They have been gaining recognition left and right. Most recently, they competed in The Windy City BBQ Classic. The competition hosted 30 teams from across the USA. Each team used a smoker, and according to the rules, no team was allowed to use gas or electricity.

the dish press clipping

There they ended up taking first place in the People’s Choice category. This just goes to show that people just can’t get enough of Real Urban Barbecue’s goodness.  Once you have a taste it’s hard not to keep eating.

Smoked Turkey

But this is just the tip of the ice berg for Real Urban Barbecue. In addition to their most recent success this past weekend, they have also been Voted Chicago’s Best BBQ by the readers’ of Chicago Magazine, the only restaurant to place in both the judges’ and peoples’ choice categories at RibFest Chicago, and Voted “Best Service” at the Taste of Highland Park 2013.

Smoked Corned Beef

Yesterday to show their employees appreciation for all their hard work, Real Urban Barbecue closed early and took their employees out to a Cubs game in Wrigley field. It was an outing that included great weather, entertainment, and good company all around.

It’s safe to say that Real Urban Barbecue is taking the Chicagoland area by storm. If you weren’t able to catch them at any of their more recent events then have no fear, September is full of opportunities. Chicago Auto Show’s First Look for Charity Gala

& Valentine’s Day at Molise PR

It has been quite the week at Molise PR, Chicago Public Relations Firm, and we couldn’t be more proud of our wonderful clients.  From the Chicago Auto Show First Look for Charity Gala to Valentine’s Day festivities, we have definitely kept busy.

On Friday, February 8, the Molise PR team got all dolled up in honor of the Chicago Auto Show’s First Look for Charity Gala.  On top of helping with some of the gala’s public relations, we were there to support two of our awesome clients, Garrett Popcorn Shops and Real Urban Barbecue, who were food vendors at this great event.  On top of the thousands of beautiful people, concept cars and delicious food, the gala benefited 18 local Chicagoland charities.

Valentine’s Day brought many exciting things for Molise PR and our clients with many of them being featured on local news stations.

Summer Jackson of WCIU’s You and Me This Morning graced us with her presence at Ignite Glass Studios, an interactive glass blowing facility and event space in Chicago’s West Loop.  Summer toured the facility, interviewed a few Ignite team members and even learned how to create her own glass heart for her Uniquely Chicago segment promoting Ignite’s Valentine’s Day workshop.  The whole Ignite team had a blast having Summer in the Hot Shop and her glass heart turned out wonderfully!

Client Eduardo’s Enoteca, part of the iconic Chicago Bravo Restaurants, was featured on the WGN Midday News Lunch Break segment.  Jordan Himmel, chef and general manager of Eduardo’s Enoteca, demoed a delicious Gnocci recipe with anchor Dina Bair promoting their Valentine’s Day night of romance held at the restaurant which included a showing of the movie Casablanca, cocktails and a 5-course meal. Click on the photo below to watch the full segment:

And finally, client Ed Debevic’s welcomed the cast of Chicago’s newest Broadway show, I love Lucy, in the restaurant to give guests a very special Valentine’s Day treat.  The cast interacted with dining guests, danced and sang, and portrayed the show that so many people have loved and adored for many years, and NBC was there to capture all the action!

Working in Chicago Restaurant PR means devouring tasty treats day in and day out.

RUB submission

Check out Molise PR client, Real Urban Barbecue on the WGN News Lunch Break. Ever wonder how to make Red Neck Tacos at home? We thought so. How about a grilled caesar salad? Our client Jeff Shapiro shows us how.

The menu at Real Urban Barbecue features homemade BBQ sauce and slow-smoked items like ribs, pulled pork, turkey, brisket and chicken slowly rotated on Cookshack smokers capable of smoking 1600 lbs of meat daily.

Even self-proclaimed ‘cue master Dan Bernstein of 670 The Score radio says, “These tiny little chunks of absolute, heavenly joy that they call Burnt Ends. It’s almost like a brisket butter when it hits your mouth.  You’ve never had anything like it, they are absolutely worth the trip.”

Prior to opening Real Urban Barbecue, owner Jeff Shapiro worked for Lettuce Entertain You for 14 years at restaurants including Bones, RJ Grunts, Bub City, Pappagus and PJ Clarke’s.  He most recently served as director of operations of Carmichael’s Steak House in the West Loop for six years. Shapiro has been winning trophies in the BBQ competition circuit for many years under the team name Dr. Deckle and Mr. Hide.  Well before “urban barbecue” became the trend it is today, Shapiro’s feverish passion has had him touring the major BBQ markets of Midwest, the Carolinas, Kansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and Oklahoma.

The restaurant also offers the nearly 7 lb. “Hungry Home-Wrecker Throwback Sandwich.”  This gigantic meal (priced at $29.95) is not for the faint of heart-or appetite.  A monstrous specially sourced bun is topped with 1.5 lbs of RUB’s house-smoked andouille sausage, 2 lbs. pulled pork, a hot shower of Texas Sauce, a pint of coleslaw, and 6 oz. of RUB’s own “Brain Buster” pickles. 28 brave souls have attempted it since summer of 2011.  Only one has succeeded.  Since opening in November 2012 in Highland Park, Real Urban Barbecue has quickly become a celebrity favorite with regular visits from Tom Thibodeau, head coach of the Chicago Bulls; John Paxson, VP of operations, Chicago Bulls; Chris Williams, Edwin Williams, Alex Brown, Craig Steltz, Earl Bennett, Chicago Bears; Matt Suhey and Richard Dent, ’85 Bears; and BJ Armstrong, retired World Champion Chicago Bulls player and super agent to Derrick Rose.    While appearing at a recent concert at Ravinia, Al Green picked up an order of ‘cue to go.  Accolades include being featured on Chicago Magazine’s “Top Ten Hot List,” Chicago Tribune’s “Top Essential Bites,” voted as the “North Shore’s Best BBQ” in August 2011 by the readers of Make It Better Magazine; and “Best BBQ,” “Best Takeout Food,” and “Best Sandwich” by readers of Highland Park Patch.  Recently Real Urban Barbecue is the only restaurant to take home awards in both the Judges Choice and People’s Choice categories at Ribfest 2012 in Chicago.  For more information, the full menu, curbside service and catering, visit www.RealUrbanBBQ.com.
