Imerman Angels, the leading global one-on-one cancer support community and Chicago PR client, has been named a Scale Award recipient at the 2017 Creator Awards for their work in providing free personalized connections that enable one-on-one support for cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers. The Scale Award, which includes a $180,000 grant, is given to established organizations that are ready to take their business to the next level.

The event, hosted and sponsored by WeWork, received 600 applicants that were narrowed down to five Scale Award finalists who had the opportunity to pitch their business to a panel of judges and explain how and why they are ready to expand. In addition to Imerman Angels, Chicago nonprofit Bunker Labs and Detroit-based The Empowerment Plan took home top honors in the category.

Founded in 2006 by cancer survivor Jonny Imerman, Imerman Angels to date has enabled more than 34,000 connections in all 50 states and more than 60 countries. These one-on-one relationships provide a cancer fighter or caregiver the chance to ask personal questions and receive support from someone uniquely familiar with the experience. Recent medical studies have shown that psychosocial support during and after the cancer fight is crucial to quality of life.

“We are thrilled that our work over the past 11 years has been recognized through this large award,” says Ben Bornstein, Imerman Angels CEO and Executive Director. “This grant will allow us to scale our one-on-one cancer support services by expanding our presence in other US markets outside Chicago including Detroit, Los Angeles and New York, plus reach more people touched by cancer around the world by expanding our digital presence and hiring additional cancer support specialists, including those who speak other languages.”

In addition, other benefits of receiving this grant include expanding Imerman Angels’ network of partner organizations, and of course, ensuring that their services remain completely free to anyone seeking support so no one has to face cancer alone.

Stop in to Gino’s East River North, a Molise PR client, to enjoy Chicago’s original deep dish pizza and other specialty menu items, plus sample new craft beers on tap provided by Gino’s Brewing Company, then head up to The Comedy Bar to enjoy stand up shows headlined by:

David Helem, September 1-3: Dave Helem is a stand-up comedian from Chicago, Illinois. He attributes his witty sense of humor to the fact that he believes there is something funny in every facet of human life.  He has performed on tour in numerous cities with Hannibal Buress and was able to open up for Doug Stanhope in 2014.  Dave Helem was a member of the 2012 and 2013 Just For Laughs Chicago festival where he performed on the “Breakout Performers” show.

Zoltan Kaszas, September 8-10: Comedian Zoltan Kaszas was born just Zoltan Kaszas in Budapest Hungary. Nineteen years later in San Diego, California he added “Comedian” to his name by stepping on stage and cracking wise. Over the last few years his wise cracks have won him, The Seattle International Comedy Competition, The San Diego Comedy Festival, San Diego’s Funniest Person Contest and The Rockstar Energy Drink Comedy Throwdown. He tells jokes in non-contest formats as well, so come and see Comedian Zoltan Kaszas live!

Andy Hendrickson, September 15-17: Not only has Andy Hendrickson made TV appearances on David Letterman, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Gotham Comedy Live and NBC’s Last Comic Standing, but he was also one of the stars of the recently released movie The Clean Guys of Comedy. It broadcast live via satellite in over 600 theaters nationwide. His stand-up style is one of the hardest to deliver: dry, clever, and clean. A true comedy veteran with over seventeen years of experience, Andy can adapt his routine to any corporate or professional audience.

Andy has a conversational delivery that draws on real life experiences based on family, work and relationships. A gifted storyteller, he shares hilarious anecdotes about life growing up as the one black sheep in a family, with two Navy Seals and three Ivy League graduates. One of his best known routines centers around his older brother who’s an Admiral, Navy Seal and a Harvard Business School alumnus. “Hey Andy, why are you’re so pale?” “Just my brother’s shadow my whole life.” In 2006, Andy was given the opportunity to thank his brother for his service and performed for him, and the troops, in Iraq. In 2011, he returned to Middle East on the Feeding Freedom Tour. Sponsored by Outback, the tour provided music, Andy’s stand-up and home cooked meals for over 40,000 troops on military bases across Afghanistan.

Paul Hooper, September 22-24: An only child with OCD, Paul Hooper channels his dysfunction into a cathartic harangue. He has an undeniable likability that he plays to the hilt through his bulletproof rants. This native of Charlotte, North Carolina, now residing in New York City, has been featured on Gotham Comedy Live on AXS TV, Red Eye with Tom Shillue, at the HBO Comedy Festival in Vegas, Bridgetown Comedy Festival in Portland, Oregon, the Boston Comedy Festival, Michael Moore and Jeff Garlin’s Traverse City Comedy Arts Festival, the Vancouver Comedy Fest and was a finalist in the 30th Annual Seattle International Comedy Competition. A seasoned headliner, Paul has performed in forty-two states and ten countries, including two armed forces tours.  HIs debut solo album, “Tense and Uncomfortable” was released in October of 2013 with Stand Up! As Imerman Angels celebrates its 10-year anniversary in 2016, the organization recognizes August as #WorldCancerSupport Month. Imerman Angels launched this campaign last year to help spread awareness regarding the psychological and physiological benefits of support when coupled with excellent medical care, and to help ensure that no one ever has to face cancer alone, without the support of someone uniquely familiar with their situation.

Since launching in 2006, Imerman Angels, a Molise PR client, has become the global leader in providing personalized connections that enable one-on-one support among cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers, as well as pairing survivors with fellow survivors, with more than 26,000 connections made in all 50 states and more than 60 countries.

The Need for Cancer Support

According to a Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer Psychosocial Study Group, when cancer patients are diagnosed and treatment begins, the primary goal is therapeutic. Psychological, emotional and social factors tend to become secondary to immediate treatment. However, according to Dr. Timothy Pearman, Director of Supportive Oncology at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, this social and emotional support has powerful benefits when it comes to survivorship:

“As cancer has transitioned from a typically fatal disease to an often chronic, manageable one, the psychosocial supportive care needs of survivors have expanded,” says Dr. Pearman. “Cancer support groups such as Imerman Angels can reduce depression and anxiety in fighters, and help them to become more active in treatment decision-making, managing side effects, interfacing with their doctors, and ultimately maximizing their quality of life during and after their cancer battle.”

In a study at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center focusing on young adults diagnosed with blood cancers facing psychological trauma during and after treatment, researchers found that 23 percent of participants met the criteria for anxiety, 28 percent met the criteria for depression and 13 percent met the criteria for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

“Imerman Angels and other organizations that provide cancer support give cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers around the world an outlet to express their feelings, as well as help to inspire hope,” says Ben Bornstein, three-time cancer survivor and Imerman Angels CEO and Executive Director.

Stand Out Against Cancer Day, August 19

On Friday, August 19, Imerman Angels will host “Stand Out Against Cancer Day” an occasion dedicated to raising awareness around the world for the importance of social and emotional support for those battling cancer. Schools, businesses, organizations and individuals alike will be encouraged to create their own Stand Out Against Cancer event to fundraise, raise awareness and help make a difference. They are also given the opportunity to have their support recognized through social media through #StandOutAgainstCancer.

Social Media Campaign

Imerman Angels is implementing a #WorldCancerSupport hashtag during August that allows people from around the world to share their cancer stories by posting on social media channels. Everyone has been affected by cancer in some way, and together we can ensure that no one will ever have to face cancer alone.

In addition, Imerman Angels will continue their 10-year anniversary giveaways of Imerman Cakes by seeking out engaging social media posts from July through September.
